Edward Hopper: That’s my cup of tea.

Edward Hopper (1880-1967) was born near New York City, in an affluent WASP family.
He’s a US painter whose realistic depictions of everyday urban scenes and urban  life impresse the viewer into recognition of the strangeness of familiar surroundings.
He started his career as a free lance illustrator and then, from 1901 to 1906, studied Painting at the Ashcan School.

He visited Europe three times between 1906 and 1910, but was not impressed neither moved by “avant garde” in Paris, or elsewhere in Europe.

Like the other painters of the Ashcan School, Hopper painted the commonplace of urban life, but specialized in creating still, anonymous figures and stern geometric forms, within snapshot-like compositions that create inescapable sense of loneliness and melancholy. So, Hopper was peculiar in catching that  moment, when time stops, and the instant comes to eternity .

In the last period, Hopper refined his vision, painting objects and persons in subtle spatial relationship, and further mastering importance of light in shaping persons, volumes, and spaces as well.    Here, we present a choice from his paintings, which are representatives of his style, and of his achievements as one of the most important painters of XX century.
